Model Selection and the Principle of Minimum Description Length

چکیده
This paper reviews the principle of Minimum Description Length (MDL) for problems of model selection. By viewing statistical modeling as a means of generating descriptions of observed data, the MDL framework discriminates between competing models based on the complexity of each description. This approach began with Kolmogorov’s theory of algorithmic complexity, matured in the literature on information theory, and has recently received renewed interest within the statistics community. In the pages that follow, we review both the practical as well as the theoretical aspects of MDL as a tool for model selection, emphasizing the rich connections between information theory and statistics. At the boundary between these two disciplines, we find many interesting interpretations of popular frequentist and Bayesian procedures. We illustrate the MDL principle by considering problems in regression, nonparametric curve estimation, cluster analysis, and time series analysis. Because model selection in linear regression is an extremely common problem that arises in many applications, we present detailed derivations of several MDL criteria in this context and discuss their properties through a number of examples. Our emphasis throughout this paper is on the practical application of MDL, and hence we make extensive use of real data sets.

Minimum Description Length Induction, Bayesianism, and Kolmogorov Complexity
The relationship between the Bayesian approach and the minimum description length approach is established. We sharpen and clarify the general modeling principles minimum description length (MDL) and minimum message length (MML), abstracted as the ideal MDL principle and defined from Bayes’s rule by means of Kolmogorov complexity. The basic condition under which the ideal principle should be app...
متن کاملThe Minimum Description Length Principle in Coding and Modeling
We review the principles of Minimum Description Length and Stochastic Complexity as used in data compression and statistical modeling. Stochastic complexity is formulated as the solution to optimum universal coding problems extending Shannon’s basic source coding theorem. The normalized maximized likelihood, mixture, and predictive codings are each shown to achieve the stochastic complexity to ...
متن کاملModel Selection Based on Minimum Description Length.
We introduce the minimum description length (MDL) principle, a general principle for inductive inference based on the idea that regularities (laws) underlying data can always be used to compress data. We introduce the fundamental concept of MDL, called the stochastic complexity, and we show how it can be used for model selection. We briefly compare MDL-based model selection to other approaches ...
متن کاملMinimum Description Length Principle
The minimum description length (MDL) principle states that one should prefer the model that yields the shortest description of the data when the complexity of the model itself is also accounted for. MDL provides a versatile approach to statistical modeling. It is applicable to model selection and regularization. Modern versions of MDL lead to robust methods that are well suited for choosing an ...
متن کاملModel Selection using Information Theory and the MDL Principle ∗
Information theory offers a coherent, intuitive view of model selection. This perspective arises from thinking of a statistical model as a code, an algorithm for compressing data into a sequence of bits. The description length is the length of this code for the data plus the length of a description of the model itself. The length of the code for the data measures the fit of the model to the dat...
متن کاملMinimum Encoding Approaches for Predictive
We analyze diierences between two information-theoretically motivated approaches to statistical inference and model selection: the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle, and the Minimum Message Length (MML) principle. Based on this analysis, we present two revised versions of MML: a pointwise estimator which gives the MML-optimal single parameter model, and a volumewise estimator which giv...
